Agroforestry:  Improving cocoa farmers’ productivity with High Performance Tree Seedlings in Ghana

In Ghana, Tree Global is working with Mondelez International and the Ghana Cocoa Board to transform low-productivity cocoa farms into high-productivity farms with at least 20% conversion of the farmland into sustainable forests.

High Performance Tree Seedlings are critical to this transformation. Using the same genetics as traditional seedlings, on-farm survival rates are increased from 40% to above 90%. Time to first yield is consistently cut in half from 4 years to 2 years. Forest tree species are provided to create shade, disease barriers and biodiversity corridors.

In addition to cocoa, Tree Global has improved productivity for mango, cashew, shea, miracle berry, coffee and mangrove, as well as timber species such as mahogany.
